Inspired by others women’s stories and her own personal life journey, Kaya Gravitter is the designer and founder of Aurora Hijabs. Here she talks about her journey to connecting hijab to the fashion world and vice versa as well as what makes Aurora Hijabs a unique hijab brand:
R.Author to hijab designer? What a transition, ‘ما شاء الله ! Tell us all about this journey!
K. Well, I’ve always wanted to have a hijab company and I’ll always be a writer too. However, I always wanted to start a company that was different from other job companies. I wanted something that was extremely diverse and something that was charitable. Because every month, I donate 10% of all of my proceeds to charity. I want women to feel empowered in hijab.
R.How are you empowering women through your brand?
K. Every month, I donate 10% of all of my proceeds to a charity to helping DV survivors. My company, Aurora Hijabs, is also about women empowerment because of what I have been through as a DV survivor, myself. I want women of all shapes, sizes, colors and faiths to feel empowered in hijab.
R.The names of each hijab is so beautiful like “Sahara,” “Prism Pink” and “Silent Ivory.” What inspires the name for each piece?
Well, I relate it to personal experiences. For example, the Sahara hijab reminded me of my visit to Egypt and the color of the sand I saw in the dessert.
R.What challenges did you face as a designer that you have overcome?
K. Well, the hardest part is choosing colors that you think potential or your current customers will like.
R.Who are you catering these hijabs to? What kind of women are your customers or is your target customer?
K. My target customer is anyone who wants to or wear hijab. However, my biggest market is converts because that is where most of my following is on my main Instagram page.
R.What does the word “hijab” mean to you? Describe also your personal style.
K. Hijab to me means modesty. Hijab is not just a scarf to me, though. It’s how you are overall as a person. My journey through wearing the hijab has inspired me to become more creative in how I dress and that creativity led me to fall in love with fashion and to founding Aurora Hijabs.
R.Which fashion icons do you admire and why?
K. I admire Audrey Hepburn’s style because she always dressed with modesty and class. There are even times where she has worn veils to cover her her.
