An Exclusive Interview With The Author Of Nanni’s Hijab

Rumki Chowdhury: Thank you, Khadijah Abdul-Haqq, for doing this interview with me regarding your latest publication, Nanni´s Hijab. I understand that this is a children’s book which not only opens young children’s eyes to the hijab, but also touches upon the very realistic issue of bullies and bullying? What kind of message did you want to portray through the book?

Khadijah Abdul-Haqq: Thank you Rumki for reaching out. Nanni’s Hijab was written to empower Muslim girls to resist being a victim of hijab bullying. Girls, especially Muslim girls, need to know they hold the power on how people treat them, and that they do not have to accept bad treatment, ever. I also wanted the book to be a resource for non-muslims to open dialog on cultural sensitivities and differences.

RC: What inspired you to write Nanni´s Hijab?

KAH: Nanni is a little girl who loves her hijabs and parading them in front of her classmates. Everyone loves her hijabs except Leslie, a new girl. Leslie bullies Nanni until Nanni could take it no longer and had to handle the situation. The socio/political climate was right for Nanni’s Hijab. It practically wrote itself. After the new president took office, the reports on hijab attacks seemed to rise and Nanni’s Hijab fell into place. Today’s Muslim girls need a book like this.

RC: Tell me more about yourself. You are a mother, daughter, sister, wife, and aunt? Do you also work or are you a full-time author?

KAH: Well, writing is the least of what I do. I am a mother, which is a full-time job. And with five children ranging from ages 5-25, there is nothing I could do that would be more important. I have worn many hats in my 42 years. However, as of late, I am a student; a girl empowerment program, GEM, facilitator; a small business owner and whatever else Allah calls me to do, including healer, motivator, lover and friend.

RC: Where can we learn more about you and your book?
