In just a year, ISIS or Daesh group rose from being an unknown terror group to challenging world security, in particular women’s rights. While much is said about western women’s freedom at risk at hands of Islamists, there is little focus on those women living under the ISIS rule in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere, because also by large they aren’t easily available to describe their lives. Unlike the Taliban who want us women to be gagged, downed with hijabs and kept out of sight, women feature very differently and largely in the ISIS propaganda heavily bordering on sexual violence and degradation of all sorts.
The cherry of the cake is that ISIS derived laws are taken out of context from the Quran or Hadith and ISIS conducts its heinous dirty work in the name of Allah. Astagfiruallah!
Since their rise, plentiful of media coverages’ have surfaced depicting ISIS treatment of women. Last autumn, a 20-year-old British girl Aqsa Mahmood or “Umm Layth” as we know her now made international headlines when she left home Glasgow to join their Syrian mission through recruitment into al-Khansa brigade, an ISIS controlled female-militia setup operational as an ultra-oppressive police force, monitoring females living under ISIS self-declared caliphate.
Umm Layth made international news for getting married to an ISIS militant whose identity is not much known through what is ISIS’s most culpable strategy of “Jihadi Bride.” Most interesting to note is a private university student Aqsa Mahmood went an overnight radicalization from being a moderately religious normal young student to a Jihadi wife downing hijab/holding machine gun luring young innocent girls to Syria. Most distasteful is how today Umm Layth uses social media to advice young wannabes jihadi brides to bring along sexual lingerie, short dresses and Android phones!
Clearly ISIS heavily sexualizes females as an object for the gratification of men. Previously I touched on these issues, here and here presenting cases explaining so called Sharia justification by ISIS “that if a woman’s body is visible, it must be available for sex to them.” Sexual Jihad fatwa, promoted by ISIS and Umm Layth deems “citing Quran, it is permissible, laudable for Muslim women to give up their bodies to militants so that they can continue the jihad to empower Islam….By doing this, according to ISIS the Quran claims, such women will get a place in paradise.” In part ii, my co-author Papatia Feauxzar will describe in depth in absence of any such concept using religious references.
The sexual jihad fatwa is a creation of perverted men’s imaginations and Islam has nothing to do with it. Since they do it in name of Islam, I and Papatia object strongly and bring this issue to the attention of global women’s rights campaigners. Umm Layth would have you believe that life under the Daesh is dandy and peachy, but many alleged defectors have come out with horrifying stories to share. Umm Asma a former Al-Khansa recruit said in one of her recent interviews that “Women are whipped, sold and stoned. Corpses are on display publicly for weeks.” Al Khansa monitor daily lives of women in Raqqa and other Daesh controlled areas to meet out inhumane punishments to women including killing a 17-year old because she removed and lowered her face scarf in the market to threatening the recent crowned Iraqi beauty Queen 20-year old Shayma Qassim who according to ISIS should join their ranks or face kidnapping.
It’s surreal that such a faction is named after “Al-Khansa” – the 7th century female convert Arabic poet of the highest cadre who recited her work in public oral competitions and earned fame throughout the Arabic world. Now we have this group of misguided hormonal youngsters patronizing us with good quality bras, under-age child brides and forced hijabs?
Daesh groups the use of women in three pronged strategy step by step:
1. Recruiting through ISIS Manifesto on Good Muslim Women Guide
2. Morality police induction into Al Khansa and subsequent marriage; Jihadi brides
3. Sexual Jihad and sexual exploitation of minority women living under ISIS rule
ISIS mistreatment of Muslim women living under their rule is full of degradation and their stance on minorities’ women surpasses all lows of dastardly. Not content with using Muslim women for their deceitful and un-Islamic purposes, Daesh ideology judges non-Muslim women as war booties. Take the example of Yezedi women – raped, undergone forced abortions, sexual trafficking and slavery particularly in Antep and Gaziantep while the Turkish regime would tell you otherwise.
HROI an NGO reported to UN, evidence of organ harvesting that ISIS deems Sharia wise ok on Yezedi women, because they are apostates according to their version of Islam. And you know what happens during an ISIS attack Yezedi tribe’s village? They separate the men and women. Then the women are stripped naked publicly, for body examination for attractiveness, breast size and invasive virginity tests are performed. Then the prices are decided keeping in mind, virgin girls, young age and prettiness and finally they get sold at open markets to male jihadi troops that can enjoy the pleasures of sex without marriage. Because ISIS deems that in Islam non-Muslim women are “gift of Allah” to Muslim fighters available on tap for their sexual services for better performance of Jihad. And since they aren’t Muslim, ISIS, argues its fighters do not need to marry these women and can fighter can keep a Yazedi woman as slave.
“From 9:30 in the morning, men would come to buy girls to rape them. I saw in front of my eyes ISIS soldiers pulling hair, beating girls, and slamming the heads of anyone who resisted. They were like animals…. Once they took the girls out, they would rape them and bring them back to exchange for new girls. The girls’ ages ranged from 8 to 30 years… from 60 only 20 girls remained in the end.” – Testimony by a 20-year old Yazedi woman, Dilara, who escaped ISIS.
This is to drive home the message that we aren’t dealing with just a bunch of confused psychopaths here, I implore to both Muslim communities and the world at large that ISIS is extremely bad news for women rights and women at large. And regardless of our religious identities, we need to seriously unite in getting rid of this evil. NOW.
